Grandma’s Monterey Sausage Pie Recipe

Take a trip down memory lane with this rich and savory Monterey Sausage Pie. A delightful combination of sausage, cheeses, and a creamy egg custard, it’s the perfect cozy meal.


Ingredients

Sausage: 1 pound (preferably whole hog sausage)

Parmesan Cheese: 1 cup, shredded

Sharp Cheddar Cheese: 1 cup, shredded

Onion: 1 cup, finely chopped

Green Bell Pepper (optional): ½ cup, finely chopped

Eggs: 4 large

Half-and-Half: ⅔ cup

All-Purpose Flour: 1 cup

Baking Powder: ½ teaspoon

Salt: ½ teaspoon

Pepper: ½ teaspoon

Green Onions or Chives (optional): for garnish


Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sausage and Veggies

In a skillet, brown and crumble the sausage over medium heat. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

In the same skillet, sauté the onions and bell peppers (if using) until softened.

  1. Assemble the Pie

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease a pie plate with butter. Spread the cooked sausage evenly over the bottom of the plate.

Top with shredded Parmesan and cheddar cheeses, followed by the sautéed veggies.

  1. Prepare the Egg Custard

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper until smooth.

Pour the egg mixture evenly over the sausage and cheese layers in the pie plate.

  1. Bake the Pie

Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes or until the pie is golden brown and set in the center.

  1. Cool and Garnish

Allow the pie to cool for 5–10 minutes before slicing.

Garnish with chopped green onions or chives if desired.
